Single-pane glass is the biggest comfort and efficiency weak point in older Portage Ave homes. One thin layer of glass has almost no insulating value, so it runs cold to the touch, frosts over on hard mornings, sweats condensation onto the sill, and lets the winter draft pour straight off the pane into the room. No amount of weatherstripping fixes the glass itself.

Upgrading to double- or triple-pane changes all of that. Two or three panes with a sealed air or argon gap between them, plus a Low-E coating, insulate the opening properly — warmer glass, no frost, far less condensation, and a real drop in heat loss.

For most homes we recommend going to triple-pane given our winters, but even a jump to quality double-pane is a night-and-day improvement over single glass.

How much warmer are double-pane windows?

Dramatically warmer. A single pane has almost no insulating value, so its interior surface sits close to the outdoor temperature — that is why it feels cold and frosts over. A sealed double- or triple-pane unit traps insulating air or argon between the panes and adds a Low-E coating, which keeps the inside surface far warmer and stops the cold-glass draft that single-pane windows create. You feel it as a room that is comfortable right up to the glass instead of a cold zone you avoid sitting near, and the furnace cycles less to keep up.

Should I go double or triple-pane?

For most Portage Ave homes, triple-pane is the better long-term choice given how cold and long our winters are — the extra pane and gas gap noticeably improve comfort and cut condensation on the coldest walls. Quality double-pane is still a huge leap over single glass and can be the right call on a tighter budget or on sheltered, less-exposed openings. At the estimate we put the price and the performance difference side by side so you can decide — often triple on the north and west, double where it is sheltered — rather than one spec everywhere.

Will condensation go away?

Upgraded glass greatly reduces interior condensation, because the warm inner pane stays above the dew point on all but the harshest mornings, so you lose the frost and dribble that single-pane windows produce. Very humid homes — lots of occupants, cooking, plants or a humidifier running high — may still see a little condensation on the very coldest days, but far less than before. Managing indoor humidity and running bathroom and kitchen fans helps the rest of the way. We can point out any humidity sources worth addressing at the measure.

Can I upgrade just a few windows, not the whole house?

Yes — you can start with the coldest, most-used rooms and phase the rest; even a handful of upgrades makes those rooms noticeably more comfortable.

What is argon gas and why does it matter?

Argon is an inert gas sealed between the panes that slows heat transfer better than air, so it lowers heat loss and helps keep the glass warm.
