Triple-pane and energy-efficient windows
In Manitoba, the rebate shapes the quote: it pays only for ENERGY STAR certified triple-pane units, so triple pane is the default here. It isn't the answer to every cold window, though. The default here
Why triple pane is the Winnipeg default
The first reason is money. Efficiency Manitoba pays for ENERGY STAR certified triple-pane windows and doors, each with an NRCan reference number, that replace existing ones in your home. Double pane and glass-only swaps earn nothing.
The second is the winter. The heating season is long and most winters bring a run of nights past −30. A third pane and a second sealed space keep the room-side glass warmer, which you feel as less chill near the window and see as less frost at the bottom of the glass.
Rebate steps
Getting the rebate: NRCan number, timing, paperwork
You claim the rebate yourself, after the work is done. Check the program page for current rules before you sign; these are the steps that trip people up.
Get the NRCan number on the quote
Every unit you claim needs an NRCan reference number. Ask for them per window on the quote.
Replace, don't add
The rebate covers units replacing existing windows and doors between heated and unheated space in your home. New openings, porches, sunrooms and garages don't count.
Keep the invoice and claim on time
There's a claim deadline counted from install and payment. Keep the paid invoice listing each unit. Our rebate guide walks through the form.
ENERGY STAR
What ENERGY STAR certification means today (one national standard)
ENERGY STAR is a certification of the whole window, not a style or a brand. Natural Resources Canada sets the bar.
One standard, no zones
Canada now uses a single national threshold for windows and doors. The old climate zones are gone, so the label means the same thing here as anywhere else in the country.
Most Efficient is a higher tier
Some models also carry the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation, a stricter bar. It's worth asking about for a big picture window, but the rebate doesn't require it.
Claims should rest on the rating
An energy claim on a quote should point to the certified rating of that exact model, not to adjectives.
Double or triple

Comfort
A warmer inner pane in a cold snap: less chill, less edge frost.
Condensation
Warmer glass helps, but it can't control indoor humidity. A steamy bathroom can still frost triple pane. See frost versus fog for what to change indoors.
Weight
Heavier glass matters on large sashes and sliders; see below.
When double still fits
Unheated spaces the rebate doesn't cover, and older frames or sashes that can't carry the extra glass.
What affects the quote
What shapes the price of triple-pane windows
Triple pane costs more than double for the same window. How much more depends on these, and on the choices covered on our replacement windows page:
- Size and style of each window
- Glass package: coatings, gas fill and spacer type
- Frame material, from vinyl to fibreglass
- Whether the model carries the Most Efficient designation
- Retrofit or full-frame installation
- How many windows are in the project
Ask for each unit's NRCan number on every quote so you compare like with like.
Beyond the glass
Frames and spacers matter as much as glass
Heat also leaves through the edge of the unit and the frame. Older spacers were metal, which carries cold to the edge; that's why frost starts in the corners. Warm-edge spacers keep the edge warmer.
Vinyl, hybrid and fibreglass frames all come in triple pane; what matters is how the frame is built and reinforced for the extra glass. Our vinyl and hybrid frames page compares them.
Practical note
Heavier glass works the cranks, hinges and rollers
On a casement, the extra weight hangs on the hinges and crank; on a slider or patio door, it rides on the rollers. Good units are built for it, but ask how large sashes are supported. Putting triple-pane glass into an existing frame? Ask whether the old sash can carry it.
Older windows
Upgrading single-pane or old double-pane windows
Most Winnipeg homes were built before the 1980s. Many still have single-pane wood sash with storms, or double-pane units from an earlier replacement now fogging.
A thin wood sash can't hold a triple-pane unit, so upgrading usually means a new window, the route that can earn the rebate. A fogged double-pane unit in a sound frame may only need a new sealed unit. The retrofit versus full-frame page explains how a new window goes in.
