Time for a new one?
When replacement beats another repair
Plenty of patio doors only need rollers or new glass. Another repair won't hold when you see:
A soft or split frame
A soft wood sill or cracked vinyl corners can't hold the panels square.
Drafts after every adjustment
If new weatherstrip still leaves a draft, the frame has moved.
Several failures at once
Fogged glass, worn rollers and a broken lock add up, and only a new door earns a rebate.
Styles
Sliding, garden or French: choosing a style
Patio door, garden door, deck door: Winnipeggers use all three for the same opening. The styles differ in how they open. The doors overview covers the rest.
Sliding
One panel slides past a fixed one, keeping the floor clear. Rollers need occasional care.
Garden (hinged)
One panel swings on hinges and closes against weatherstrip like a front door, which many find tighter in the wind.
French
Both panels swing, opening the full width, so you need floor space. Add a screen door for summer.

Installation: what happens to the sill, trim and flooring
Measure the opening
The installer measures the rough opening, not just the old door, and checks it for square.
Remove the old door
A rotted sill or subfloor shows up now, so a good quote says what happens if it does.
Set, level and seal
The frame sits on a sloped sill pan, shimmed plumb and level, then insulated and sealed so water sheds outside.
Trim and flooring
Trim and capping go back on. If the new sill sits at a different height, the flooring may need a transition strip.
The glass

Triple pane
Three layers of glass. The room-side pane stays warmer, so there's less ice at the sill, and the rebate requires it. How triple pane works.
Warm-edge spacer
The strip between the panes. A warm-edge one carries less cold to the glass edge, where frost starts.
Low-E coating
An invisible coating that reflects heat back into the room.
Rebates
Rebate rules that apply to patio doors
The window and door rebate is run by Efficiency Manitoba, not Manitoba Hydro. A new patio door can qualify if it's ENERGY STAR certified and triple pane, carries an NRCan reference number, and replaces an existing door between heated and unheated space in your home.
The exclusions catch people out: sunrooms, porches, verandas, garages, apartments and new openings don't qualify. A garden door from the kitchen to the deck is a candidate; a door inside an enclosed porch isn't. Claim within the program's deadline. What affects the quote
What changes the price
The quote depends on:
- Style and width: slider, garden door or French pair
- Frame material, and colour inside and out
- Glass: triple pane, low-E, tint, blinds between the glass
- The opening: out of square, a rotted sill, or a size change
- Trim, capping, flooring transitions and taking away the old door
A same-size replacement needs no building permit from the City, though the work still has to meet code (City of Winnipeg). Two more Manitoba rules: installed quotes normally show GST only, because the installer pays the provincial sales tax on materials (Manitoba Finance), and if you sign with a salesperson in your home, you have a set period to cancel (Consumer Protection Office).
Settled houses
Fitting a new door to a settled opening
Houses here settle on clay, so an opening may be out of square or the floor may slope toward the door. That's ordinary, and the installer's problem to solve: the frame is shimmed true, and a badly racked opening is partly reframed.
Ice at the sill of a brand-new door points to humidity or to an install that left a gap. Feel for a draft. If there is one, call the installer back; if not, start with our frost guide.
