Full-view
One large pane that shows off the front door, swapped for a full screen in summer. The cleanest look, and the heaviest glass to handle.
Ventilating
Glass that slides down to open a screen above. Easy to vent on a warm day without a panel swap.
Retractable-screen
The screen rolls into the top of the door and pulls down when you want air. Nothing to store. For mesh alone, a screen door is simpler.

A storm door is a handful of small, replaceable parts. Check which one is actually wrong before replacing the door:
Closer
The cylinder that pulls the door shut. One that's fine in June can slam or crawl in January.
Handle and lock
Handles crack and latches stop catching as the door sags. Most are standard and swap easily.
Sweep and weatherstrip
The rubber stiffens and wears in the cold. New strips stop snow blowing in underneath.
Glass or screen insert

Fitting
Sizing and fitting older entries
Storm doors come in common sizes, but older entries don't always follow them. Houses here settle, so openings are rarely square and brick mould can be uneven.
Plenty of Winnipeg houses predate 1960, and their front entries are often a size nobody stocks. A pro can build out the opening with trim, adjust the door's bottom expander, or order a custom size.

Older homes
Storm doors on heritage homes
On an older wood front door, a storm door is one of the kindest things you can add. It keeps weather off the finish and evens out the swelling and shrinking through the seasons. A full-view door keeps the front door on show; have it fitted to the opening, not the other way round.
In the two Heritage Conservation Districts, Armstrong's Point and Crescentwood-Enderton Park, and on listed buildings elsewhere, a heritage permit may be needed for changes to the front of the house.
