Window film for glare, privacy and security
Window film is a thin layer applied to the inside of the glass you already have. It can tame the evening sun, frost a bathroom window or help a shop window hold together. This is film for homes and businesses, not car tint. As with our other glass services, we connect you with an independent Winnipeg installer who'll say what film will and won't do.

Sun and glare
Solar and glare-control film
Winnipeg gets a lot of sun. On long summer evenings a west window takes it low and straight in, and in winter it bounces off the snow.
Solar film cuts heat and glare: a hot west room, a screen you can't read, a floor fading under a picture window. Films run from nearly clear to mirrored.
Film is the lighter fix. If windows are old, drafty or fogging, new low-E glass does the same job and more; see triple-pane windows.
Film doesn't qualify for the Efficiency Manitoba window and door rebate, which covers complete ENERGY STAR triple-pane windows and doors. It's not a Manitoba Hydro grant; check the program page for current rules.
Privacy
Privacy and decorative film
Privacy film is what most people here call window frosting. It gives glass an etched look that lets light through but blurs the view: a bathroom window, a sidelight, an office wall. It can cover the pane or run as a band at eye level.
Decorative films add patterns or a business name, and film comes off, which suits renters. For a permanent look, frosted or patterned glass can be cut to replace the clear pane.
Security
Security and safety film for storefronts
Security film is thicker than solar film. It doesn't make glass unbreakable; it helps hold broken glass together so a smashed pane stays mostly in the frame.
Storefronts and doors
It can make a break-in slower and noisier, and it works best anchored to the frame. For new panes, see storefront glass.
Safety at home
On a big low window, film helps keep a broken pane from scattering. It doesn't replace required safety glass.
Historic storefronts
The Exchange District is a National Historic Site. Check with the City before altering a historic storefront.
Sealed units
Can film go on sealed units and triple-pane glass?
Usually, with care. Film makes the inside pane absorb more heat, which can crack the glass or strain the seal. Dark films on large panes, low-E glass and aging units carry the most risk.
A good installer checks the glass and which way it faces, then picks a compatible film. Check your window warranty too. If a unit is already foggy between the panes, film won't help; that's a failed sealed unit.

What shapes the price of window film
Film is priced by the area covered and the work involved. The installer will ask about:
- Solar, privacy, decorative or security film
- Total glass area and number of panes
- Removing old film first
- Access: upper floors, ladders or storefront hours
- Frame anchoring and custom-cut graphics

Care
Care and lifespan in a cold climate
Film cures slowest in the cold, so a hazy look for a while after install is normal. Once cured, clean it with a soft cloth and ammonia-free cleaner, and never scrape it. Room-side frost in a cold snap is humidity, not the film; our frost and fog guide explains why. Ask what the film's warranty covers.
