Can tempered glass be cut after it's made?

No. Cutting or drilling tempered glass makes it shatter, so no shop can trim a tempered shelf or top you already have. They can make a new piece, cut and drilled first, then tempered. That's why accurate measurements matter.

What thickness of glass do I need for a tabletop or shelf?

It depends on the span, the load and the supports. A protective top on a wooden table can be thin; a stand-alone top or a long, loaded shelf needs thicker glass, often tempered. The pro recommends one.

Can a single pane be cut for an old wood window?

Yes. Wood sash and wooden storms usually hold single panes, and a glass shop can cut one to size. Measure inside the putty line or bring the sash in. A pro can reglaze it too, which is worth doing before the cold sets in.

Glass types

Annealed, tempered or laminated: which you need

Annealed glass is ordinary flat glass. It cuts easily and suits frames, inserts and many shelves, but it breaks into sharp pieces.

Tempered glass is heat-treated after cutting. It's much stronger and breaks into small, blunt pieces, but it can't be cut, drilled or notched afterward; it shatters. The size and every hole are set before tempering.

Laminated glass bonds two layers to a plastic interlayer, so broken pieces stay put. The building code expects tempered or laminated safety glass in places like shower enclosures, glass doors and glass railings. The pro will tell you which your job needs.

Measure the space, not the old glass
Old glass may have been cut short. Measure in a few places and note the smallest size.
Allow a little clearance
